My Approach:
I’m a teacher with my pencil. I love explaining stuff in the simplest clearest most entertaining way I possibly can. My approach to illustration emphasizes an educational element. I get a lot of work with educational marketing projects, textbook projects, and internal corporate training materials.

It's all about distilling complex ideas into simple clear images. Learning maps, picture games, sequential instructions, exploded or cutaway views of things, illustrated flowcharts, concrete visualizations of abstract concepts, narrative explanatory comics… these are some of the tools I use to help people communicate their complex information with a fun and clear presentation.

Medical:
I studied human anatomy for a year in the Human Kinetics department at the University of Guelph. This was a special program in my Art degree, a crossover course into the sciences. This has led me into a specialty of drawing instructional medical cartoons to explain medical issues to lay people. Clients in this department include Dogs in Canada Magazine and the Canadian Red Cross.

Educational Marketing:
Being a business owner myself I understand the critical need for a clear targeted message. I love making cool looking art, but I always know that clarity of communication reigns supreme. Interestingly the same principles apply to education as to marketing, because at their best they are the same thing… presentation. That’s why you’ll see me working with marketing firms like MarketForce and CIM (Consumer Impact Marketing) Launch! where I’ve done projects for Microsoft, Dentyne, Sobey’s, Dell, BluRay, and more.

Instructional:
I started out my illustration career as in-house illustrator for Creative Options, a firm providing safety and loss prevention training programs for companies including CocaCola, K-Mart, Lowes, Pep Boys, Norshipco, etc. School oriented projects have included educational books and teaching materials for Scholastic Canada, the Centre for Enlightended Relationships, and Cambridge University Press (this one was for ESL language training texts).

Why I Do It:
My love for both comic books and learning have led me into this work. Deepak Chopra once suggested to combine your talents with your skills and you will find your purpose in life. So I have.

Deepak’s statement has also lead to a second parallel career as a life coach, where I can directly teach people how to be in tune with themselves and what they want to achieve in their lives, and I can teach them some incredibly powerful skills to empower them to take positiv effective action in their careers, relationships, and personal power. My coaching role continually and increasingly enhances my illustration abilities. Illustration is about far more than drawing pictures. It’s about understanding and communicating.
