Mighty Bubble: Inspiring Kids to Love Handwashing

Overview / Challenge

How do you get small children genuinely excited about washing their hands?

The community of Flin Flon, Manitoba and Creighton, Saskatchewan, supported by AECOM, needed a campaign that would make hygiene fun, memorable, and contagious —in the good way.

The original brief was simple: create a sticker to remind kids to wash up.

But a sticker alone wouldn’t spark imagination. We needed a story that would turn handwashing into a heroic act.

My Role

As illustrator and creative director, I developed the character concept, narrative world, and campaign visuals that transformed a simple public-health message into an engaging multimedia adventure.

I led storytelling, character design, and illustration across all materials, ensuring the visuals were playful, empowering, and culturally resonant for the local community.

 Process

I created Mighty Bubble, a soap-powered kid superhero who battles mischievous germ villains.

The campaign evolved far beyond the initial mirror sticker into a full storytelling ecosystem:

  • Mini-comics introducing the Mighty Bubble universe and germ-busting adventures

  • Activity sheets, stickers, and temporary tattoos for classrooms and homes

  • A song and music video teaching the handwashing steps

  • A magnetic fridge puzzle reinforcing healthy habits

  • A community mascot costume for school visits and parades

  • A character blog sharing updates and challenges from Mighty Bubble himself

Every element worked together to make hygiene a source of play and pride.

The impact

The character and his story came alive in the minds of Flin Flon's children.

Mighty Bubble even had a blog, a song, and a music video.

The mascot character made appearances at schools and community events. He grew so popular in the community that kids would flock to the mascot, hug him and tell him they loved him!
